IL-SEN: Emil Jones chosen to replace Obama

According to Fox News IL State Senate President Emil Jones will be chosen to fill the next 2 years of Obama’s term.

This is kind of the safe choice. Jones is Obama’s political mentor, he’s African-American and he’s 73 years old.

He probably won’t run for re-election and I’m guessing we’ll see a crowded primary.

  1. A couple days ago I heard it was Danny Davis. Ah it dosen’t matter, he’s a short term pick like Biden’s sucessor. What type of idiology is Jones? Liberal, moderate what?

  2. Assuming it really is Jones, I guess the 2010 primary will be heated.  Jackson and Schakowsky seem very interested, maybe one of the statewides looking at primarying Blagojevich (madigan, Hynes, Giannoulias) would give this race a hard looking at?  If it’s not Duckworth, this probably means she has a decent chance at VA Secretary.

If it is Emil Jones and he turns out just to be a place holder, who is the favorite in a potential Jackson/Schakowsky showdown?  I guess it wouldn’t just be two-person race, though, and that it could get up to even four or five.  Well, this should be interesting to watch, nonetheless.

  3. I’m a big believer that the strongest and best candidates emerge victorious from primary fights rather than being selected, so I preferred a placeholder here.  Besides, all other things equal, I’d rather the electorate decide rather than the governor.  I don’t know much about Jones other than he’s a big Obama supporter, which is good news.  The last thing we need is someone mucking up Obama’s first two years in office.

  4. President-elect Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat may go to Illinois state Sen. Emil Jones, a source told FOX News.

You: “Emil Jones chosen to replace Obama”

    Talk about misleading.

  5. which I doubt then this will set up a very interesting primary in 2010 with probably three or more seriously top tier candidates.

  6. Neither of the big Chicago papers is going with this story.  And I’v checked several times on each of their web sites.

The Tribune is running a story, however, that ambitious pols are leery about accepting an appointment from the tainted Blago.

History has shown over the last 25 years that they would do far better to take the appointment.  The only appointee to seek nomination and be turned down during this period was Sheila Frahm who held Bob Dole’s seat for two and a half months in the summer of 1996.
